Editor's note

The New Year is one of the oldest festivals of the world, dating back to the pre historic era. The New Year History itself forms an extensive area of study. The history of New Year has undergone a series of changes over the ages to achieve its global form. The urge of celebrating New Year as a vibrant festivity emerged at the dawn of civilization. At present, New Year is celebrated on January 1 and it had been an essential part of the cultural and traditional practices of the different communities inhabiting the world. This had been the practice for the last few centuries but the New Year History had its root to yet far off times. Therefore, this is the principal reason that the New Year traditions vary from country to country

The earliest instance of New Year is found in Mesopotamian culture. It was about 2000 BC, when the people of Babylon used to observe New Year celebrations on the day of the Vernal Equinox that is during the middle of March. It was the Romans, who recognized March 1 as New Year Day in their calendar. At that time there were only ten calendar months beginning from March. The relevance of this fact can still be seen in the names of some months, which were been set according to their respective sequences in the calendar. As in the calendar of the present time the months from September to December are placed as the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth months respectively, previously they were positioned as the seventh, eighth, ninth and the tenth months. In Latin, 'Septem' means, seven, 'Octo' means, eight, 'Novem' means, ninth and 'Decem' means ten.

The Roman calendar also passed through an array of rectifications. The calendar was attributed with the months of January and February in 153 BC, by Numa Pontilius, the second Roman king. Thus the festival of New Year got shifted to the month of January for the first time, although people carried on observing New Year on March 1 for quite a long time after that.

This is still not the end of the New Year History. Several new calendars were been devised. Julius Caesar implemented the Julian calendar which was created based on the solar system whereas the previous calendar were based on the lunar cycle. The Christianity has added up new meaning to the New Year Celebration by lionizing the Christmas Day, the Annunciation Day and The Easter as New Year Day at various times. There had also been times when January 1 had been abolished to be celebrated as New Year altogether.

It was in the Gregorian calendar established by Pope Gregory XII , New Year was firmly positioned on January 1. It was readily accepted by the Catholics and then by the Protestants and soon became a holiday recognized by the entire world slowly and steadily. ________________________________________________________

Rahul’s mom only had one eye. He always hated her; she was such an embarrassment for him. His mom ran a small shop at market. One day his mom visited him at school. He was so embarrassed. He threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school..."Your mom only has one eye?!" classmates taunted him.

Rahul sometimes wished that his mom should just disappear from this world. After getting irritated by the taunting classmates one day he said to his mom, "Mom, why don't you have the other eye?! You're only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don't you just die?" His mom did not respond. Rahul guessed he felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt good to think that he had said what he wanted to say all this time.
Maybe it was because his mom hadn't punished him, but he didn't think that he had hurt her feelings very badly.

That night...he woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. His mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake him. He took a look at her, and then turned away. Because of the thing he had said to her earlier, there was something pinching him in the corner of his heart. Even so, he hated his mother who was crying out of her one eye. So he told himself that he would grow up and become successful, because he hated his one-eyed mom and their desperate poverty. Then he studied really hard. Rahul left his mother and came to Delhi and studied, and got accepted in the University .Then, he got married, bought a house of his own and had kids, too. Now he is living happily as a successful man.

This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see him"What?! Who's this?!"... It was his mother...Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on him. His little girl ran away, scared of his mom's eye. And he asked her, "Who are you? as if he tried to make that real. He screamed at her "How dare you come to this house and scare his daughter! Get out now!" And to this, his mother quietly answered, "oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address," and she disappeared. Then a wave of relief came upon him. One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to his house. He lied to his wife saying that he was going on a business trip. After the reunion, He went down to the old shack, that he used to call a house...just out of curiosity there, He found his mother fallen on the cold ground. But He did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand.... it was a letter to her son.

Son,
I think this life has been long enough now. And... I won't visit Delhi anymore... but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school.... For you... I'm sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you.
You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye... so I gave you mine... I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in his place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, 'it's because you love me.' I miss the times when you were still young around me. I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me.

His world shattered! Then He cried for the person who lived for him. His Mother

Moral of the story:Respect your parents and one who loves you and cares for you becoz they will only help you when you need them the most.

Did you know?

  • Hiccups...
  • Phone Booth

Reason why we get up hiccups....
Hiccups happen when the diaphragm, the muscle that controls our breathing, becomes irritated and start to spasm and contract uncontrollably. With each contraction, air is pulled into the lungs very quickly, passes through the voice box, and then the epiglottis closes behind the rush of air, shaking the vocal chords, causing the “hic” sound. The irritation can be caused by rapid eating, emotional stress and even some diseases. The best cure? Breathing into a paper bag. This calms the diaphragm by increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream.

How to calm your tongue after eating hot spicy food...
The spices in most of the hot foods that we eat are oily, and, like your elementary school science teacher taught you, oil and water don't mix. In this case, the water just rolls over the oily spices.
What can you do to calm your aching tongue? Eat bread. The bread will absorb the oily spices. A second solution is to drink milk. Milk contains a substance called “casein” which will bind to the spices and carry them away. Alcohol also dissolves oily spices.

The Mojave phone booth was a lone telephone booth in what is now the Mojave National Preserve in California, which attracted online attention in 1997 due to its unusual location. Placed in the 1960s, the booth was eight miles (13 km) from the nearest paved road, fifteen miles (24 km) from the nearest numbered highway, and miles from any buildings.

The booth was removed by Pacific Bell on May 17, 2000, at the request of the National Park Service. Per Pacific Bell policy, the phone number was permanently retired. Officially, the removal was done to halt the environmental impact of visitors, though pressure from locals unhappy with the increased traffic may have contributed. Additionally, a letter written by the then-superintendent of the Mojave National Preserve mentions confronting Pacific Bell with some long-forgotten easement fees. A headstone-like plaque was later placed at the site, but it too, was removed by the National Park Service. Fans of the booth also claim that Pacific Bell destroyed the actual enclosure after its removal.
The story inspired the creation of an independent short film, Dead Line, and a full-length motion picture, Mojave Phone Booth. The booth was also an inspiration for the prologue of the Glenn Beck novel The Overton Window.

Independence Day celebrations at RITS

Independence Day was celebrated in RITS on 13 th august 2010. The arrangement began before the I-day and RITS was embellished with ribbons and Indian flags, kites, hangings, balloons all over the premises. We celebrated I-day by cutting delicious, yummy, attractive tricolor cake. A small antakshri competition was organized by Rose Club. People from all departments participated and sang melodious patriotic song. It was a day to pay a mark of respect to our saviors because of whom we are breathing an air of freedom which does not have the elements of exploitation and repression.

Significance of Independence Day

The significance of the Independence Day in the existence of a nation is of greater value. The day is much more than merely celebrating the anniversary of India's free statehood.

15th August 1947 symbolizes the victory of Indian patriotism which the nation got after uncertain yet brutal struggle from the repression of the British colonialism. The British, who oppressed India for centuries had primarily arrived to initiate business but steadily captured the entire government of the nation. They educated the Indians and in the process generated enthusiasts who weren't hesitant in helping them expanding their regime. Men and women from all over India joined hands and fought for India's freedom. Many were acclaimed while others contribution went unnoticed. However, praise wasn't what they desired for. It was the dream of free and autonomous India which motivated them to walk the path of struggle unselfishly. Neither did they battle for their region nor for their natives, but for India and Indians. At the time of growing communal and caste conflicts, it becomes significant to remind us that the people who laid the foundation of free India has always dreamt of an integrated nation. Hence, it is our duty to live and sustain their dreams, the sole reason for which Independence Day in India is observed.

Health & Lifestyle

Do you suffer from neck pain, a burning between your shoulder blades, lower back pain, headaches, digestive problems, breathing difficulties, eye strain? ... the list goes on.

All of the above could be related to how you sit at your PC for hours at a time every day, barely moving, eyes fixed on the screen with deadlines to meet. The majority of us spend so long sitting at a desk it's within our interest to focus on our sitting posture. Here are few approaches you can use to ensure better health and lifestyle habits:

>Check the position of your screen
Have your chair at the right height so your eyes are level with your screen and your knees are slightly lower than your hip joints.

> Let your wrists rest on the desk
Have your computer in front of you.

>Let your feet sit flat on the floor and not tucked under your chair
Keep your shoulders and back relaxed ,take regular breaks away from your PC

>Try to sit up straight (more below)
Fix your eyes on the screen

>Lift your shoulders when typing or clicking the mouse
Have any equipment where you need to twist constantly to access it

>Collapse your neck as you read the screen
Use your PC in low light conditions

Compare the two photographs. Even slight adjustments in body position will make a difference to how much stress is put upon the body. In the GOOD computer posture you will see the head is sitting directly on top of the spine and its weight (approx 4.5kgs/10lbs) is passed down to the pelvis and into the chair. In the 2 nd NOT SO GOOD computer posture, the neck has dropped forward and the weight of the head is no longer completely supported by the chair.Because the spine is curved forward the muscles in the middle of the back are required to do more (inappropriate) work to keep the head up.
also to look at the screen she has to pull her head slightly backwards, this over time will cause the spine to curve more.

Sochta hoon kya likhun tumhe, kon ho tum..

Koi sapna, haqeekat ya afsaana ho tum,Kon ho tum..

Kabhi dil ke pyasey sehra mai barsat ho tum,Kabhi aas pas, kabhi mere sath ho tum,

Ya phir khubsurat sa ek ehsaas ho tum, Kon ho tum

Shabnam ho tum, phool ho tum, ya phir dil ki choti si bhul ho tum, Kon ho tum,

Koi sitara, koi gulaab, koi khwab ho tum,

Mai itna keh sakhta hun ke meri dosti ka maan ho tum…!!!

samandar main utarta hu to aankhe bheeg jati hain

teri aankhon ko padta hoon to aankhe bheeg jati hain

tumhara naam likhney ki ijaazat chin gai jab se

koi bhi lafz likhtaa hoon to aankhe bheeg jati hain

teri yadoon ki khushboo khirkion me dastak karti hain

tere gham me sulagta hu to aankhe bheeg jati hain

na jane ho gaya hu is qadar akela main kab se

kisi se baat karta hu to aankhe bheeg jati hain

wo sab guzre hue lamhe mujh ko yaad aate hain

tumhare khat jo padta hu to aankhe bheeg jati hain

main sara din bauhat masroof rehta hoon magar joon hi

kadam chaukhat pe rakhta hu to aankhe bheeg jati hain

teri gali se ab mera rishta waajib saa hain

magar jab bhi guzartaa hu to aankhe bheeg jati hain.......
