Work Life Balance

Apart from the basic amenities of food, water and air that anyone needs to survive in today’s world, the very next human need would be a livelihood. In order to have a fruitful existence, every person needs to have a job. Now, since it gives us a reason to get off our bed every morning, we often neglect other aspects of our lives because of it. This makes it extremely important to maintain a balance between life at work and outside it. Sometimes, we are not able to keep our work away from our mind and that tends to meddle in our personal life. This results to increased stress and anxiety levels.

Work-life balance needn’t always concern situations within the office, something as trivial as a long commute to and from work may result in unwarranted frustration. Not only is such an improper balance unhealthy, but ultimately it ends up affecting your efficiency at work as well. A happy person is able to give his 100% to the task on hand and perform well, which creates a cycle of happiness by garnering appreciation and performing even better. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, it was decided that workers needed a break in the week to let off some steam, which led to the inception of weekends in our work culture. Back then, most of the work constituted manual labour and workers truly left work when they left for the weekend. With the gradual rise in technology, connectivity increased to a level where one could work from home, even on vacation. Even though it is a godsend in case of work-emergencies, we needn’t let this bug overcome our “me” time. Here are a few tips on balancing work and personal life:-

1. Gap your work priorities wisely

In most cases, work stress can be reduced simply by rearranging our to-do list in a manner that places important and stressful tasks evenly spread out between lighter tasks. This allows your mind to be prepared for heavier task ahead while doing something that doesn’t stress you out. ies, we needn’t let this bug overcome our “me” time. Here are a few tips on balancing work and personal life:-

2. Taking out time for relaxation through meditation

Our mind has to work as much as the rest of our body and needs to recuperate just as much. Taking out two 5-minute breaks in the morning and evening to push every thought out of your mind and lose focus, without a single worry. Studies have shown that employees who practice meditation techniques are more efficient than those who don’t.

3. Exercise well to maintain a healthy body

Exercise is usually the first activity sacrificed when we get too much involved with something else. Exercise is a proven stress reliever as it releases endorphins through your body and lifts your mood. It becomes necessary to exercise (in the form of yoga, gym or even sports) in order to keep a healthy lifestyle

4. Manage Chores regularly so that they don’t pile up on weekends

It is especially difficult to get home on a Friday evening from office when you know that a big pile of dishes are waiting to be cleaned on getting home, or to do that tiring chore that you promised your wife about doing it a week ago. One easy way to get it done, apart from paying someone else to do it would be to regulate your chores to spread them across the week rather than doing them all at once on the weekends.

5. Take out sufficient time for your family and friends

When we spend quality time with our loved ones, we feel happier and more fulfilled. This, in turn enables us to work with a free mind and perform better. Moreover, nothing can be more relieving than the knowledge that our family is happy and well cared for.

6. Try to make work fun as much as possible

It has been said that you will never have to work a day in your life if you love what you do. Having fun at the workplace is highly important to boost morale of your co-workers, keep the team spirit high and for a company to retain its employees. Fun might be as simple as a casual chat during breaks to having dinner with your project team!

Apart from these, you can do a lot more to lead a professionally healthy life. With the right prioritization, all the things will fall in place and give you a sense of fulfilment. Worrying about things will generate negative energy, instead try to face all problems with a solution oriented mind. Just as a wise man once said,

“For every problem under the sun, Either there is a solution, or there is none If there is one, try to find it, Otherwise, never mind it”
